April is a certified First Aid and CPR instructor through Emergency First Response (EFR) and NIKTA. Her previous experience includes working as a labor and delivery, newborn, and post-partum nurse in the U.S.; managing health promotion and health education projects with youth and adults in the U.S., India, Uzbekistan, and the Kyrgzy Republic; and most recently she enjoyed working in the Nurse’s Office at ISA in Amstelveen.
Healthy Here NL offers First Aid Workshops as well as First Aid and CPR/AED Courses. Both Workshops and Courses include time for hands-on practice, discussing minor and serious first aid scenarios, and information on local medical emergency services.
Here’s what we mean by “Workshop” and “Course”:
Workshop: all information is shared and learning completed during the Workshop with hands-on practice, examples from real life scenarios, and time for Q&A. Workshops are generally shorter (2-4 hours) than Courses. Workshops do not result in a nationally/internationally recognized certificate for the participant.
Course: most of the background and theoretical learning takes place at home, before the in-person class. This preparation is done via e-learning (NIKTA) or book reading (EFR) and takes 6-8 hours to complete. Next, during the full-day, in-person class, participants review what they learned and practice their First Aid and CPR skills through role-play and scenarios. Participants then demonstrate the skills they have learned (wound care, preforming chest compression, etc.). After completing the pre-learning, test, and in-person practical day, participants are eligible to receive certification in First Aid and CPR/AED (from EFR or NIKTA).
A First Aid and CPR/AED Course therefore takes more time (6-8 hours prep time + 8 hours in-class practical time) and costs more (the registration fee pays for the e-learning or book, the certification from the certifying agency, and for the full-day practical class) than a Workshop.
