It was not long after the birth of my third child here in the Netherlands that I got a letter in the mail from Bevolkingsonderzoek Nederland inviting me to "participate" by having a pap smear. With my limited knowledge of Dutch language and the word “invitation,” I thought I was being invited to participate in research. I promptly threw the invite into the trash, as I had zero interest in participating in research. Five years later, I received another invitation in the mail. This time, with full understanding of what was being asked, I participated. The Bevolkingsonderzoek is the national cancer screening program. Based on my age and sex, the invitations were sent for the cervical cancer screening program.
In the Netherlands there are three screening programs for adults (the other 6 are prenatal and perinatal screenings). These are: breast cancer screening, cervical cancer screening, and colorectal cancer screening. Invitations are sent to your home and each individual can choose whether or not they would like to participate in the screening program. The invitations are sent based on the individual’s age, sex, and the results of their last screening. Below, the screening programs that are offered in The Netherlands are discussed.
Breast cancer screening
In the Netherlands 1 in 7 women gets breast cancer. Breast cancer screening is offered to women aged 50-75. Women are invited for a mammogram every 3 years. If something is found on the mammogram, follow-up assessments and treatment, are offered.
The Bevolkingsonderzoek website has detailed information about the screening program for breast cancer in English, Turkish, Polish, Arabic, and Dutch languages.
Cervical cancer screening
Cervical cancer screening is a bit more complex. It is offered to people aged 30-60 with a cervix. The initial invitation is at age 30 with a follow-up invitation at ages 35 and 40. If the HPV results are negative at 40, the next invitation for screening will be at age 50. If at 40 the results are positive, an invitation for screening will be offered at 45. Same at age 50, if the results are negative the next invite is 60, if they are positive, 55. People aged 65 will only receive an invite if they were positive for HPV at 60.

Colorectal cancer screening
Colorectal cancer screening is offered to people aged 55-75. The invitation is mailed every 2 years. Individuals who agree to participate are sent a FIT home screening kit to collect a stool sample. The kit is sent to a laboratory where it is screened for traces of blood. If blood is found in the sample, the individual will be referred for a colonoscopy.
